Greetings from My Mountain Cabin,
All life is connected. Often, your daily experiences seem to suggest a singular existence; one devoid of genuine linkage with anything larger than self.
✶ I am the only one who could possibly be going through what I am experiencing.
✶ No one else could truly understand the situation in which I find myself.
✶ I am an island; isolated, adrift in a sea of confusion that is impersonal and uncaring.
✶ Look up the word lonely in the dictionary and you’ll see it accompanied by a little picture of me.
But, this is hardly the case, for nothing in Nature exists in a vacuum. All life is connected in a very real, physical way. Waves of energy intersect with one another throughout the universe. Even as you read these words, you are awash in a sea of energy—microwaves, television broadcast signals, infrared radiation, radio transmissions and subtle vibrations of awareness evidencing your connection to other living things. You are fortunate to have a reticular formation in your brain that screens irrelevant background stimuli, or you would be immersed in a kaleidoscope of distraction.
Your own energy is not restrictively contained within your body. Is it no wonder, therefore, that you feel differently sitting under a tree on a sunny day, gazing across an expanse of grass, completely at home among bushes, flowers, and butterflies, than you do plopped at a desk in a concrete cave, mulling over paperwork illuminated by artificial light? The energy that is you connects with the energy that is around you, combining into a living, pulsing entity that is universal life.
Realize that you are not alone in the grand scheme of things. Nature is not made up of fragmented parts that have no relationship to one another. The entire universe is a seamless web of interconnectedness where all elements are inextricably woven one to another. And that includes you. You belong here.
Discovering and paying attention the expansiveness of creation can help you appreciate the magical nature of your own being. And how many people of your acquaintance could benefit from a dose of magic—a change of perspective that assured them they were not too old to be useful—not too depressed to be worth paying attention to—not too addicted to alcohol or drugs to ever be healthy again?
This thing that you call Self is your window on a greater level of consciousness.
Be well, do good work, keep in touch,
Ed
