You are more than a physical body—a flesh space suit containing a few basic minerals, some protein, lots of water—animated by a mild electrical charge.

Greetings from My Mountain Cabin,

The forms making up the cosmos have a much more fascinating composition. From the enormously gigantic to the incomprehensibly miniscule, what you perceive as matter and energy are interchangeable. Try to picture matter as simply being waves of energy set into high oscillation whereby physical form is suggested.

You are not just your body, for if you were, at its most fundamental level, that which is You would be . . . nothingness.

If you were to examine the matter of which you are composed—the flesh on your arm, for instance—you would likely come to the conclusion that your arm is solid. It is fairly smooth and can be easily felt.

If you were to look at your arm under a magnifying glass, you would discover that your arm is not nearly as smooth as initially thought. You would now see ridges, crevices, perhaps some scar tissue and also hair follicles. Even a small tattoo would appear to be a vast sea of ink.

Viewing the same surface under a powerfully lit microscope would reveal cellular structure—molecules containing the component parts that make up organs, bones, nerves, veins, arteries and blood.

An electron microscope would introduce you to the world of protons, neutrons, electrons, fig newtons and grey poupons (Just seeing if you are paying attention.)

And even further than that, the elemental building blocks of life are called by scientists, leptons and quarks—phenomena that can be affected by the power of merely being observed. These sub-atomic particles are separated by relatively expansive gaps of space.

So you see, what you perceive as solid is to a large degree empty space. There is a whole lot of you that isn't there. Yet you are capable of activity that transcends your (relatively empty) physical dimension. And this is very real, not only theoretical. Future intentionality, for one.

You have a marvelous capacity to say, for instance, "in five seconds I am going to get up from the chair and get a glass of water." (N.B. The writer just did exactly that . . . I'm back at the keyboard.) The task you anticipated completing expressed itself as an intention for the future. Future intentionality cannot be explained by mere biochemical process. There is no physical location in your brain where reside chemicals and enzymes indicating a future mindfulness.

And if thoughts of what are to be are non-physical, they must be discorporate . . . other than mind/body . . . that is, in the realm of Spirit!

There is no place where Spirit leaves off and humankind begins, because the physical universe was made manifest so that Spirit could experience itself.

How exciting! How humbling.

Be well, do good work, keep in touch,

Ed
