Guilt is an emotion that has no constructive purpose. Experiencing guilt implies that you have failed something or someone. Guilt is actually blame directed inward.
I feel guilty because I . . .
✶ didn't apply myself in school and become the physician I know I could have been.
✶ was a surly teenager who treated my parents badly, giving them little reason to be proud of me.
✶ never saved a dime throughout my working career and am now struggling to make ends meet as I approach retirement.
✶ have occasionally used people for my own gain, with little concern for their feelings or welfare.
The reason you have taken birth--your mission in EarthSchool--is simply to love and learn from loving relationships. And as the word learning implies, you are a work in progress, an instrument learning to play a part in a great orchestra. Enjoy the music that is you. If your essential nature were perfect, you would have no need of learning anything. There would be no reason for you to be in human form.
The person you are now is a necessary step in becoming the person you are to be. If you were to change any significant element in your past--correct an action or an inaction that has prompted you to cloak yourself in guilt--you would not be who you are today. And if you were not yourself, who would you be?
The choices we have made along life's pathways are best viewed holistically. That is, the whole is greater than merely the sum of its parts, even as the totality of sound produced by an orchestra is more than simply strings + brass + percussion + woodwinds + . . . or the taste sensation that is a piece of chocolate cake is more than just flour + cocoa + milk + eggs + sugar blended in a bowl and then baked.
The word holistic comes from the word holy, which means associated with the Divine.
Therefore, events unfolding according to Divine Plan are never in error. All is as it should be. Guilt is a misplaced emotion because it assumes an error has been committed, which is holistically impossible. You are perfectly the person you are to be.
No one can be you more perfectly than you can.
