Greetings from My Mountain Cabin,
Each of us sits alone in a small boat that floats with the current in a huge river of life. There is a vast multitude of fellow travelers all heading inexorably downstream, just as countless millions have done since the origin of the human species. The journey is at times exhilarating, and frightening at others. Our progress consumes our everyday consciousness. The joy is in the waypoints that constitute the journey.
Every person knows that this river adventure will not last indefinitely. The flowing water terminates over a huge precipice at the end of the trip. Without exception, every boat will float over the waterfall and disappear from view. From our current vantage point, we cannot fathom the precise nature of what lies beyond. As we near the end of our journey, the roar of falling water becomes ever more apparent. The delusion of physical immortality perceived by those in the bloom of their years often yields to fatalistic acceptance of the inevitable with the passage of time.
Of this we can be sure—our individual fate is not unique; it is common to all who are floating along with us. There are no exceptions. Everyone is headed toward the waterfall.
That is as it should be. There is a comfort to the realization that we are all in this life adventure as fellow travelers. Our common destiny keeps us from being consumed with fear. How unfair life would be if you were the only one to die and everyone else kept floating along their merry way.
And knowing your fate has already been experienced by your loved ones makes it somehow more bearable. If Mom and Dad could handle it, so can I!
Viewing your own ultimate transition with through the lens of acceptance allows you to more comfortably deal with the dying of those close to your heart.
Do not dread the transition of a life completed. Never look at grieving as a failure of faith. Allowing emotional scars to heal takes time, and must be done according to an internal metronome beyond your conscious manipulation. The rhythm of everything that is does not cease.
The universe is not a cosmic accident, an absurd happenstance. Every element in creation is purposeful. Planets are not spinning out of control, crashing into one another in a giant cacophony of misdirection. Galaxies and solar systems continue to dance in an interdependent harmony that is evidence of a grand orchestration. And a part of this incomprehensible musical score is the ebb and flow of human life.
Death is an end to life in the same sense that awakening is an end to slumber. With a peaceful assurance, greet the dawning of a new adventure. It is absolutely impossible for you to be kicked out of the universe.
In death, all continues to unfold as it should. Nothing is lost where death shall have no dominion.
Be well, do good work, keep in touch,
Ed
