Greetings from My Mountain Cabin,
Early this morning Annette pried me away from my computer screen and led me to the window of our study. She called my attention to the rising sun, a marvelous glowing ball appearing over the horizon, its rays gentle fingers of light penetrating the morning mist. Her message was that life consists of a series of moments--islands in time that can be ignored or cherished. Holding her hand, taking a deep breath and standing in silent repose reminded me that there is more to life than answering emails.
I am usually unsuccessful in adhering to New Year's resolutions. Perhaps specific shoulds do not agree with my personality (or my attention span). Instead, I am more comfortable with replacing a laundry list of intended behavior with a single word. Single words can be recalled with ease any time I choose. A single word encourages mindfulness.
My word for 2010 is Appreciation.
What a wonderful word! I appreciate the gift of life I have been given; birth at a time in the history of human events when I can delight in loving relationships with specific people who would not be a part of my reality were I born in a different era.
I appreciate the beauty and mystery of all that surrounds me; the marvelous healing and restorative capacity of my body; the connection I feel with the natural world, including animal companions who have come into my life to teach me unconditional love; and the privilege of bearing witness to an unfolding cosmology where physics and metaphysics intersect.
In other words, Life is good!
The sun has risen higher since I returned to my computer. There is a smile on my face as I type these words. Appreciation is synonymous with Joy.
"How very special are we, for just a moment, to be a part of life's eternal rhyme." ~E.B. White
Be well, do good work, keep in touch,
Ed
