Greetings from My Mountain Cabin,
They are terrestrial manifestations of a design that certainly includes human beings, but is not of human origin. Without the benefit of a formal education, the creatures who share our planet are apparently able to live life as it was intended for them by paying attention to natural inclinations. It is as though they already know how to walk in balance, simply by living according to instinct.
Is unified consciousness literally true, or simply a colorful metaphor? Consider these phenomena . . .
✶ Bees—Did you know that all bee hives consist of cells that are perfect hexagons—six-sided cylinders—because that architectural structure represents the strongest framework for containing the greatest volume of honey? And that bees in my neighborhood will make a hive virtually identical to those made by bees in yours? The brain of a bee is smaller than the head of a pin. Could they be accessing a level of awareness that goes beyond their physical assets?
✶ Whales—Orcas and humpbacks apparently have complex auditory communication. Certain utterances—words—refer to specific things. They even have regional dialects. Perhaps a whale in the southern hemisphere would say, "Y'all come back now, y'heah?" Or one swimming off the seaboard of New York might say, "Yo! Ya wanna piece of me?" (A little humor, there. OK, very little humor.)
✶ Elephants—Elephants are believed by some wildlife biologists to have psychic ability. During periods of drought, an elephant herd discovering a waterhole will apparently prompt other herds to simultaneously reorient the direction of their travel toward the same site. Elephants have been shown to exhibit bereavement behavior. Are they capable of such higher order thought that includes emotions?
✶ Groundhogs—In different parts of the US, these animals are referred to by different names—woodchuck, marmot, monax, even whistle pigs. They exhibit a behavior I have not seen in any other animal, and they ALL seem to do it. A groundhog will venture close to the pavement of a highway and watch cars go by, seemingly fascinated by the passing parade! They often stand far too close to traffic for safety. Foxes, bears, geese, hawks, raccoons, possums, armadillos do not do this. (A 'dillo often seems motivated to make it across the road, usually with disastrous results.) It is almost as though groundhogs have a collective understanding of—Hey, let's all do this . . .
No doubt you could add your own observations to mine.
Assuming for a moment that the laws affecting other life forms on Earth similarly affect the human of the species, it stands to reason that homo sapiens also has the ability to walk in balance, if we could pay greater attention to our intuitive inclinations and cast away the cognitive clutter that pervades our everyday consciousness.
We experience a feeling of harmony when we periodically return to that still, small voice within by daydreaming, becoming immersed in a good book or watching an engaging movie, spending a few moments in prayer or meditation, making love to someone who is essential to our happiness, or while performing yoga or tai chi ch’uan.
During instances in which we surrender conscious control of our lives to the understanding present in our genetic makeup, we remember who we are, acknowledging that we, too, are Keepers of Ancient Wisdom. Nature is our biological cradle.
You are at Home even as you read this. All is as it should be. And so it is . . .
Be well, do good work, keep in touch,
Ed
